Thanks for sharing. As a diasporic Desi music geek who also grew up in the 80s and 90s between India and the US... I relate to this SO HARD. And, being raised female and being queer added whole other levels of unbelonging to all the worlds I bumped up against. BTW have you heard Charanjit Singh's "Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat"?
We are definitely not alone in this. I use to DJ a Bollywood night in Montreal back in 2009/2010 called "bombay the hard way" .... I was DJ Desipower:) I would play Ten ragas every night... was a big inspiration for my Acid House Ragas side project.
OMG love this detail! Hahah DJ Desipower is an awesome name. What a fun night that must have been. I'm a Bombay girl and would have loved it. Ten Ragas is such a standout album -- I've made looper tracks based on some of the dope basslines in TRTADB. I'm slightly embarrassed to say that I only learned about Charanjit relatively recently, after I had already moved to the US and he had already passed away (he lived literally walking distance from my house in Bombay!), and I heard about him through a white male friend. Sigh, but yay.
There are two great short documentaries about Charanjit, by filmmaker Rana Ghose (who followed him around to dozens of shows between 2010-2015) -- feel free to check these out if you haven't already; such a great capture of the vibe and times:
