A while back I wrote a piece about album postpartum, about finishing ASHA and then having to sit with it for months before it actually came out into the world. Making a record means spending every bit of creative energy you have. By the time it’s actually done, you’re completely depleted. Then there’s this strange gap, you’ve poured everything into it, and now you’re just waiting, with nothing left in the tank and nowhere obvious to put whatever does come back.
Starting this Substack was my answer to that. Writing used a different part of my brain than making music. It gave me somewhere to put the energy that didn’t have an outlet yet, somewhere to keep creating while the album sat waiting for its release date, and while I slowly refilled whatever had been emptied out.
A few months have passed now. ASHA is out in the world. We’ve been touring, and this last run was humbling in the best way. So many people came up and told me they’d been reading the Substack and how much it meant to them. I knew people were reading along, I’d see the occasional comment, but I didn’t realize it was actually affecting people the way it clearly was. That caught me off guard, in the best way.
Somewhere in the middle of all that, I realized the well isn’t fully refilled yet, not all the way, but I can feel it starting to come back. When that feeling shows up, I want to chase it. That pull toward writing new songs, demoing, getting back into studio mode, it’s calling again, and I don’t want to ignore it.
So I think I need to step back from this for a while. Not quitting, just redirecting. Whatever creative energy I have right now needs to go toward new music and touring, not toward a weekly essay. I don’t know exactly when I’ll be back here, but I will be, there’s still a lot of this story I haven’t told yet.
Thank you for reading all of this. For sitting with me through the song origins, the mod years, the BJM tours, the heartbreak and the generosity, the album named after my mother. It’s meant more to me than I probably know how to say. I’ll see you when I see you.
