I've been thinking about that last anecdote you wrote, about Alex Maas feeling 'angry' by hearing something he thought was really good. I find it interesting that one would feel that way, rather than experiencing a positive feeling like, say, inspiration.
You mentioned you eventually saw his point of view, but I wanted to ask... what do you feel? How hearing/experiencing others music drive you and your music?
